Barry Cryer SLAMS David Beckham in the middle of a chivalrous email hack | Celebrity News | Show biz & TV
David was caught in a scandal last Friday when emails leaked alleging they contained furious rants from the former England captain about not being given a knight for his charitable work.
Comedy legend Barry, who worked on material for Tommy Cooper, Morecambe and Wise and The Two Ronnies, lambasted David’s pleas for privacy after the controversy emerged, saying: “Anyone says, “We want our privacy” then sell their marriage to a magazine … excuse me ?! “
The 81-year-old told The Sun: “He worked so hard and blatantly to be Mr. Nice Guy, hasn’t he?” before adding: “Shit hit the fan now, hasn’t it?”
Barry, who received an OBE in 2001, also revealed that he rejected the offer of a knight, citing the “debased” honor system and saying the list of honors is now “sticky”.
“It’s full of jobworths and people who bought peerages. You can’t throw a brick out a window without hitting a knight,” he said.
The comedy legend also pointed out that he might fire his OBE, saying it’s “cooler” to turn down the honors now.
Reports say the hackers demanded a payment of € 1million (£ 860,000) from David for not making the leaked emails public, but that he had refused to give in to blackmail.
David’s PR Simon Oliviera, allegedly part of the leaked email conversations, told Express.co.uk: Image deliberately inaccurate. “
